Roger Federer has been almost the exact same position Maxime Teixeira found himself at the French Open, staring across the net at one of the big games.
More than a decade ago, well before the 16 Grand Slam titles and millions of dollars in revenue, a green-as-can-be face Federer stood opposite Andre Agassi at a tournament in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland.
“You know, on the one hand, that you can’t win,” said Federer shortly after beating Teixeira 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 Wednesday in the second round. “And if you win, it’s like a miracle. A crazy miracle”.
Novak Djokovic also reached the third round at Roland Garros, advancing after Romanian opponent Victor Hanescu retired with an injury while finishing 6-4, 6-1, 2-3. The victory extended their perfect start in 2011 to 39-0 and stretched his overall winning sequence to 41.
For the women, 2010 French Open finalist, Francesca Schiavone and Sam Stosur has advanced easily, while top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki and third-seeded Vera Zvonareva was the hardest routes in the third round.
