Inglourious Basterds: Tarantino film has record opening weekend

It marked the biggest opening of Tarantino’s career, beating Reservoir Dogs,Pulp Fiction and both Kill Bill movies.

The film took a total of $65.1 million around the world, including $37.6 million in North America where it shot straight to the top of the box office chart. Tarantino’s previous record opening in North America was $25.1 million for Kill Bill Vol 2 in 2004.

German moviegoers also lapped up the Second World War tale, a revenge fantasy starring Brad Pitt as the leader of a Jewish-American group out to scalp Nazis. The film topped the box office there and in other countries including France, Australia and the US.

At the US box office, Inglourious Basterds trounced nearest rivals District 9, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobraand The Time Traveller’s Wife. Critic reviews have been mixed although there has been universal praise for Christoph Waltz, the Austrian actor who steals the film with his role as SS colonel Hans Landa. Diane Kruger, Eli Roth and Melanie Laurent also star.

Talk has already turned to a prequel, with the Weinstein Co keen to capitalise on the film’s success. According to Harvey Weinstein, the plot forInglourious Basterds II is already set and Pitt is ready to sign up.

'Inglourious Basterds'' secret Oscar campaign strategy

Surely, the question has occurred to you: Why isn't Oscar-mad Harvey Weinstein releasing "Inglourious Basterds" in Oscar-friendly November or December? Doesn't he have faith that "Inglourious Basterds" can run the derby? Hey, Quentin Tarantino proved himself in 1994 when "Pulp Fiction" was nominated for best picture and Tarantino won best screenplay.

Last year, Harvey held back "The Reader" to the last possible stretch, giving it a limited opening in Los Angeles and New York in December, then wide release in January. The strategy paid off with five Academy Award nominations -- including a surprise bid (to some, not us) for best picture -- resulting in the Big Win at Long Last for Kate Winslet as best actress.

Answer: Harvey plans to reserve that last-minute, ambush strategy he employed for "The Reader" for his other major Oscar pony, "Nine," Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Tony-winning musical starring Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard. For "Inglourious Basterds," he plans to use the "Crash" campaign model.

By releasing "Inglourious Basterds" in theaters now, Harvey can give the flick a second wave of ballyhoo when the DVD comes out late this year. Because the DVD will be a mass release, it won't need to be watermarked with numerals identifying each disc with the name of an academy member or other award voter. That's one of the sneaky ways "Crash" beat front-runner "Brokeback Mountain" for best picture of 2005 -- Lionsgate blitzed Hollywood with more than 120,000 cheap DVDs.

To manufacture and ship a watermarked DVD costs about $20. The cost for a non-watermarked equivalent: $5.

Beware, Hollywood. Given how red rivers flow in Tarantino pix, the town will be engulfed in a blood tide this December when Harvey unleashes his "Inglourious Basterds" DVD campaign. It will probably pay off with two Academy Award nominations: best screenplay (Tarantino) and supporting actor (Christoph Waltz). Maybe more. "Pulp Fiction" got nommed for best picture when there were only five slots; this year there will be twice as many.

They may have two hectic careers, a large brood of children and the world's media to deal with, butBrad PittandAngelina Joliestill manage to have an exciting sex life.

Brad reveals that his favourite place to make love to his partner is as wild as the rest of their lifestyle.

It's not a bed, a broom cupboard or a kitchen table, but a stone grotto behind the swimming pool waterfall at his home.

'It's a great place for sex,' he reveals in an interview with Parade magazine.

While we're happy the couple are still very much in love, couldn't they just be a little less perfect, just once?!

Brad, 45, also talked about using drugs in his early Hollywood career.

'I liked to smoke a bit of grass at the time, and I became very sheltered. Then I got bored,' he says.

The effects of smoking started to have an effect on his acting career, forcing him to make a choice about his future.

'I was turning into a damn doughnut, really. So I moved as far away from that as I could. I was done,' he says.

Angelina, 34, and Brad have six children together, but the proud father says he has no plans to marry their mother just yet.

He told the magazine, 'I have love in my life, a soul mate - absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don't get married, I replied, 'Maybe we'll get married when it's legal for everyone else.'

'I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it - hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights.'

The couple have six children; Maddox, 7, Pax, 5, Zahara, 4, Shiloh, 3, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 1. Shiloh and the twins are their natural children while the older boys are adopted.

Model family: Brad and Angie are gorgeous, successfull and still very saucy. Damn them!

The Jolie-Pitts live nomadic lifestyle, with Angelina travelling to war zones, and the family moving between film sets, and homes in New Orleans andFrance.

While that would be enough to exhaust any normal family man, the actor appears to revel in his role as a doting dad.

He says, 'Children are a dominant value in my life now, and they weren't before. They were always something I thought I'd get around to having when the time was right. It wasn't what I was really seeking.

'This family is full of life! There are laughs, aggravations, irritations, but at the end of the day, it's fun. When life is really good, it's messy.'

All that AND he has time for sex behind waterfalls? He's too good to be true!

But she looked impossibly slender as she joined partnerBrad Pitton the red carpet for the premiere of his new film Inglourious Basterds last night.

The 34-year-old actress wore an unforgiving leather bandeau dress by Michael Kors, which clung to her fragile frame as she stood alongside tanned and healthy-looking Brad.

Angelina also showed off new additions to her tattoo collection - swirls around the existing body art on her arms.

Last night was Brad and Angelina's first public appearance since they walked the red carpet atCannesin May.

The couple, whose relationship has been the subject of repeated rumours in recent months, made a show of togetherness as they embraced on the red carpet.

But while Angelina was greeting everyone with a large Hollywood smile, Brad looked less comfortable.

Of course, it may well have been the stress of weeks of heavy promotional duties for his new movie, which have seen him repeatedly away from his family.

While Brad was promoting the film Angelina remained at home with Maddox, eight, Pax, five, Zahara, four, Shiloh, three, and twins Knox and Vivienne, one.

But, ever the professional, Brad patiently signed autographs for the huge crowds of fans waiting for him and Angelina.

He then led the mother of his six children through the crowd by her arm, his teeth set as he negotiated the busy red carpet.

Brad, 45, is said to be having continuing problems in his relationship with Angelina.

He has moved into a separate two-bedroom house from the rented family home they were sharing in Beverly Hills.

And reports of a rift between the two were heightened when he was spotted talking to his ex-lover Katja von Garnier at a promotional event for the film inGermany.

A friend told Angelina he was with Katja, who he dated in 1997, and she is said to have reacted angrily when he returned to Los Angeles.

'She was at breaking point and started screaming and shouting at him. It went on for nearly three hours. At one point she was punching his chest.'

He may be more famous for his love life than his film career, but Brad Pitt is rapidly gaining a reputation as a serious pot smoker too.

The father of six admitted that he only gave up smoking cannabis when he became a father a few years ago.

During an interview on US chat show Real Time, Pitt also joked that he was 'an artist' when it came to rolling joints.

Pitt, 45, was chatting to host Bill Maher about his latest film, Inglourious Basterds, when Maher brought up his role as a pot smoker in True Romance.

Maher said Pitt seemed 'right at home' playing a complete stoner.

'I certainly had my day. Now it kind of turns me into a doughnut,' Pitt replied.

Then the actor, who has six children with his partner Angelina Jolie, admitted he only quit smoking pot when he became a father.

'I'm a dad now. You want to be alert and my eyes used to glaze over when I did that,' he revealed.

Earlier this month, Pitt spoke about his penchant for pot in an interview with Parade magazine.

But the actor said he had stopped smoking when his habit began affecting his acting career.

'I liked to smoke a bit of grass at the time, and I became very sheltered. Then I got bored,' he told the magazine.

'I was turning into a damn doughnut, really. So I moved as far away from that as I could. I was done.'

But during his interview on Real Time it became obvious that Pitt had continued smoking cannabis until fairly recently.

Maher mentioned a party that he had been to some years ago with Pitt. He told the audience that Pitt 'rolled the most perfect joints' he had ever seen.

'I'm an artist,' Pitt joked in response.

Pitt and his partner Jolie, 34, have six children; Maddox, 7, Pax, 5, Zahara, 4, Shiloh, 3, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 1.

Shiloh and the twins are their natural children while the older boys are adopted.

Pitt has been busy promoting his latest film, the Quentin Tarantino-directed Inglourious Basterds.

In the film, Pitt plays a Nazi-hunting US soldier who kill and scalps members of the Third Reich.

The Angelina Jolie effect (or how single women chase after married men)

As any single woman will tell you, all the good men are taken.

But that makes them all the more attractive, apparently.

Research shows that single women view married men as better catches than bachelors.

The fact that they already have someone's seal of approval adds to their desirability.

The phenomenon, known as 'mate poaching', could perhaps explain why Angelina Jolie fell for Brad Pitt, despite him being seemingly happily married to Jennifer Aniston.

The U.S. researchers showed 100 single and married female university students pictures of the same man and asked them how attractive they found him and whether they would try to start a romance with him.

In each case, the labelling on the photo had been tailored to suit what the volunteer liked in a man.

In addition, sometimes the man was described as single and other times he was said to be attached.

A group of men did the same with a picture of a woman.

The Oklahoma State University study found that the single men were most drawn to the woman when they thought she was single - but the reverse was true for the unattached women.

They, it transpired, had set their sights on the 'married' man. Four times as many of them were interested in him when they thought he was attached, as were keen on him as a singleton.

In contrast, married women were far more interested in the single man - suggesting they either respected the bonds of wedlock more, or yearned for a free spirit.

Writing in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the researchers said: 'Single women in this study were significantly more interested in the man when he was attached.

'This may be because an attached man has demonstrated his ability to commit and in some ways his qualities have already been "pre-screened" by another woman.'

But men do not necessarily have the moral high ground.

Previous research has found that a man is more likely to try to lure a woman out of a relationship than a woman is to try to poach a married man.

The study also found that up to one in five longterm relationships begin when one or both partners are involved with someone else.

We "rarely" fight: Brad Pitt

London, Aug 13 (PTI) Hollywood's 'It' couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been dogged by split rumours all throughout their four-year-long relationship, but the actor says that they are at peace with each other and rarely fight.

The couple who have six children together, put up a united front at the London premiere of 'Inglorious Basterds' with Pitt rubbishing reports of a rift between the two, reported Daily Mail.

"We rarely rarely fight. We both have been around long enough and have been in enough relationships to know what we want out of it to know when we're wasting time," he said.

The Academy winning actress said that she was thrilled when Pitt referred to her as his "soulmate" in a magazine interview.

"That is very cool. Well, he's mine. It is what it is," said a beaming Jolie.

It's no secret that actor extraordinaire Brad Pitt has a soft spot for New Orleans. He's been living in the city and helping to rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward after hurricane Katrina with his organization the Make it Right Foundation.

Now some New Orleanians are showing their appreciation by campaigning for Pitt to run for mayor in 2010. And they're spreading the word by wearing "Brad Pitt for Mayor" T-shirts.
