"DWTS" couple Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy call off engagement

Smirnoff, 31, and Chmerkovskiy, 28, began dating in summer 2008 and after mere six months of dating announced in December of that same year that they are engaged to be married.

But, the adorable pair is no longer ready to walk down the aisle. Reps for the couple on Tuesday confirmed to E! they had called off their engagement, adding that the two had broken up completely.

"I am confirming that they did indeed break up," a rep for Smirnoff told E!'s Marc Malkin.

Although no reason was given for the break-up, the grapevine has it that the split was due to their busy schedules, including the upcoming season of “DWTS”.

Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy, who just finished their run of Burn the Floor on Broadway, had previously planned to marry in Manhattan's Plaza hotel in June 2010 but put their wedding plans on hold due to their busy schedules on Broadway.

"We're (working) 14 hours a day," Chmerkovskiy told People magazine over the summer. "This is our life right now."

"We're not rushing," Smirnoff told the magazine at the time. "As long as we're together, tying the knot is a plus, it's something extra."

Despite the split, the duo will fulfill their obligation and dance together at this month’s Emmys, according to E!’s Malkin.

ABC, which airs "Dancing With the Stars," has not made any comment yet on the announcement. Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy are expected to return to the show, which premieres Sept. 21.

Smirnoff began dating Mario Lopez after having been partnered with him during the Fall 2006 third season of Dancing with the Stars. The relationship lasted two years. Shortly after splitting from Lopez, she began dating Chmerkovskiy.
