"Meet Me At The Equinox": Death Cab For Cutie Lands 'New Moon' Single

Well, surprise, surprise. Last year was Paramore's turn on the spotlight when, after releasing two songs on the Twilightsoundtrack, they were catapulted from emo-indie obscurity to wider fame. Maybe this year it's Death Cab for Cutie's turn.

I'm going to be a music snob for a bit and say I hope it doesn't make DCFC that big. Then again, they've managed for the longest time, being one of the more known bands on the indie circuit, releasing numerous albums, and finding their songs used on shows such as The OC and Six Feet Under. But with the New Moon soundtrack heading in a more indie direction, thanks in part to Stephenie Meyer's deeper involvement, the band finds themselves on the verge of being introduced to a much, much, much wider audience with "Meet Me At The Equinox", the leading single off the soundtrack, whose music video will debut on September 13 at the MTV website.

"We didn't expect it to be chosen for the first single," the band's bassist, Nick Harmer, told MTV News. "We were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe. I have no idea if [Meyer] approved it or what."

"It's been an exciting process, because we've been so removed from it," he added. "We were in [Los Angeles] for a week and we went into the studio and ... recorded the song and submitted it. We didn't know where anything stood, and then we just got a call last week, like, 'Guess what? Your song has been chosen as the first single.'"

Hearing news that DCFC grabbed that first single was, at first, a little weird for me. With the indie direction, the New Moon soundtrack is starting to be pretty surprising, considering that indie stalwart Bon Iver and Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke are at work on songs, too. While they can whip out songs about love and heartbreak, it just doesn't fit right, initially.

In DCFC's case, it's also an unusual combination, with Harmer admitting that only guitarist Chris Walla has read the Twilight books. "The big connection for us is, here's a wildly popular book series about vampires--which are awesome--set in the Northwest, and we happen to be from the Northwest as well," Harmer said. "There's this sort of hometown pride kind of thing going on." (The band hails from Bellingham, and the books are set in Forks. Washington state, yep.)

"I think that a lot of our songs in general concern a lot of the things the main characters in the books are going through," he continued. "There's a lot of stuff about relationships beginning and ending, and the questioning that happens around being in love and falling out of love. That's a comfort zone for us, so a lot of the lyrical content Ben [Gibbard, the band's vocalist] writes also happens to line up with what the characters are going through in the film ... So it wasn't difficult for us at all."

Not really difficult, it seems--even if Gibbard hasn't read the books, which means he hasn't written from any of the characters' perspectives, he still nailed the song's essence. "The emotional stuff is what he homed in on, because that's what we do," Harmer said. "It's an uptempo song ... it fits right into the Death Cab canon. The lyrics are darker and brooding, the music is a little more up. I don't know if it's a rock song, [but] when you hear it, you think, 'yep, that is a Death Cab song.'"

Being an indie kid who's loved DCFC songs from somewhere in the beginning, I'm actually excited, and perhaps wary at the same time. Can't blame me. The New Moon soundtrack hits stores on October 20, but expect a complete tracklisting within the coming weeks.

Now, I'll listen to Narrow Stairs again and sing about stalkers...

Thought on Death Cab for Cutie getting New Moon's first single?
I'm stoked! Good band, good series...
I'm over the fence, but it's gotta be good
Is it just me, or is the band selling out?
I haven't heard of them, so we'll see

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Entertainment WeeklyEntertainment Weekly

Entertainment Weekly's fall movie preview features New Moon on its cover. Ahhh! Oh, but wait, no Robert Pattinson. JustKristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner hanging out, getting close. In fact, the only time everyone's favorite sparkle vampire pops up is to talk about Taylor.

"It was a stress-free job for three months," says the Pattz. "All the pressure was on Taylor."

So yes, this is a Team Jacob article. Kristen, who is actually looking more pretty than grumpy for this shoot, does her part and talks up her chemistry with Taylor.

"Just because of how I felt around him. I literally saw Jacob in him. We have that relationship. It's lamely cute. I love that kid. I would do anything for him. I would kill for him, literally."

As for her chemistry with Rob, she just says she's not pregnant...

"It's so absurd. I walk out of my trailer with my pants undone—and they think I'm pregnant? I mean, really?! They think I’m pregnant? Come on! Like, dude I don't get it."

OK, just to be clear, that answer was actually in response to all the tabloid nonsense she has to deal with; the Robsten situation was never addressed, obviously.

Now let's get serious, because this is a serious movie. K.Stew had to explain the differences betweenNew Moon and Twilight because Taylor was too busy showing off his flips...

"We needed to make something commercial but stay true to the book," she says of the first film. "We didn't have enough money. It was all very impulsive, and that's what I love about that f--king movie. But I think New Moon is gonna be even better."

She's also head of the Twilight Saga Police. "We definitely feel protective of the series. The directors are interchangeable, so while it's exciting to have new opinions, at the same time it's like, 'Look, this has way more to do with what we already created.' "

And that's it. So is everyone even more excited?! Plus tomorrow is New Moon trailer day! Or there's this trailer in French that's going around if you want to cheat:
